Virtual Eschatologies

Virtual Eschatologies brings together a body of research on spatial sound — particularly Ambisonics — and machine listening through neural networks. A vector-based amplitude detection model, trained on a self-made First Order Ambisonics (FOA) dataset, was deployed in real time to drive spatial FM synthesis.
These concepts were put together in the form of an audiovisual installation at Zwitschermaschine Berlin. The machine-listening device was deployed alongside the films, together with a sculptural device born from the rendered shapes of the sacred — called Temples. The films were projected onto the walls of the gallery, and a FOA array was built so the projections would not be severely interrupted. At the center of the space, a ZOOM VR-HR microphone ran the “feedback” loop between the model and the synthesis. Lastly, on a white plinth, a sculpture — a plexiglass polygon with water and 3D-printed versions of the shapes seen on the films — closed this recursive process concerned with the immanent, the sacred, and an alternative representation of eschatology.
The installation ran between the 20th and 22nd of March 2026, during the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts’ SoundsAbout winter season at the Universität der Künste Berlin. The research was developed with the support of Notam (Oslo), EMS (Stockholm), Culture Moves Europe and the Goethe-Institut.
